I worked in the school for 3 years where Doug Lemov codified TLAC. Kids were miserable and compliant only because they knew how bad the punishments were (a full week of lunch and after school detention) if they didn't obey. I now work in a school where we build relationships with our students because we don't have threats to fall back on. This book reinforces the idea that "those kids" are so damaged that they need to be taught in this militaristic, compliance oriented way.
I used TLAC techniques in my classroom for two years when I worked at a charter school that used this as their guidebook. The techniques "worked." My classroom looked compliant. Kids were mostly doing their work and making academic progress. What I didn't dig deeply enough into at the time, as a new White teacher instructing mostly Black students, is that these techniques told my students over and over that the way for them to succeed was through *doing what I said.* Not advocating for themselves, not thinking critically, not speaking up. Shutting up and SLANTing. In our current climate, does that not seem problematic to you?This book completely misses the humanity of the kids in front of you. It promoted the idea that the most important person in the room was *me,* not my learners. In future years I thankfully found Conscious Discipline, Positive Discipline, and other relationship-building classroom management strategies that help learners be fully seen, heard, and valued. I hope someone reading this review finds them now as well. For context, look at the strategies used in more affluent schools -- if a kid chooses to "opt out," they're talked to by their teacher in a respectful way about what might be going on for them that day. They're not put on the spot and then told to try harder.Would you want your own child in the kind of rigid, "no excuses" classroom culture Lemov creates? I think most teachers' answers would be no. The popularity of this book with teachers and leaders is deeply problematic.
