Ebook About Satoru Iwata was the global president and CEO of Nintendo and a gifted programmer who played a key role in the creation of many of the world’s best-known games. He led the production of innovative platforms such as the Nintendo DS and the Wii, and laid the groundwork for the development of the wildly successful Pokémon Go game and the Nintendo Switch. Known for his analytical and imaginative mind, but even more for his humility and people-first approach to leadership, Satoru Iwata was beloved by game fans and developers worldwide. In this motivational collection, Satoru Iwata addresses diverse subjects such as locating bottlenecks, how success breeds resistance to change, and why programmers should never say no. Drawn from the “Iwata Asks” series of interviews with key contributors to Nintendo games and hardware, and featuring conversations with renowned Mario franchise creator Shigeru Miyamoto and creator of EarthBound Shigesato Itoi, Ask Iwata offers game fans and business leaders an insight into the leadership, development, and design philosophies of one of the most beloved figures in gaming history.Book Ask Iwata: Words of Wisdom from Satoru Iwata, Nintendo's Legendary CEO Review :
This book is a sort of cobbled together autobiography of Satoru Iwata, Nintendo's former CEO from 2002 until his death in 2015. The book is made up primarily of interviews posted on the Hobonichi website, and some 'Iwata Asks' interviews from Nintendo's website. This format makes the book seem almost like a journal, with Iwata describing events that happened in his life and how he approached different situations. Each entry is about a page long, and they are organized into chapters that collect about seven to ten entries that are all loosely about a common theme. The end of each chapter also has a collection of shorter quotes from Iwata. This is a unique format, and in some ways I prefer it to a traditional autobiography. This book was more a collection of stories and advice from Iwata, instead of him trying to tell a cohesive story about his own life. The reader still gets an idea of what kind of person Iwata was, and what factors shaped his personality and business philosophies, but it also feels more instructional. You get the feeling that Iwata would want you to learn from his experiences; that he wouldn't want to waste time just telling you about his own life simply because he's an interesting person. It makes sense to me that someone with this mindset was able to accomplish so much. RIP to a pioneer of the industry, and respected leader. This book is a simple, heartwarming and, at times, a sad read.Through Nintendo Directs, a lot of us felt like we got to know Satoru Iwata. It was truly a sad day when he passed. The Nintendo Directs, which Mr. Iwata often hosted, stopped almost immediately. The presentations have yet to return in the same spirit. The impression I got from watching Nintendo Directs, was the Satoru Iwata was an incredibly humble man who managed to hold onto his inner child despite having grown to manage the most iconic gaming company of all time. This book reaffirms that impression. In it, we learn of Mr. Iwata's early love of making others smile.I grew up playing a lot of HAL Laboratory games, but had no idea who Satoru Iwata was. I was a child. It was not until he became the President of Nintendo that I learned that he was a programmer on a lot of games I love including Earthbound and Pokemon Snap. Satoru Iwata was a hardworking soul who truly believed in the unity of video games in an age where many adults saw them as a waste of time. This book is not an autobiography and I expect that some will find this frustrating. However, this is instead a collection of some of Mr. Iwata's thoughts over the years. If you ask me, we are lucky to even have this much. Sometimes we lose people prematurely and they do not have time (or desire) to leave behind a memoir. Interspersed are random nuggets of wisdom from Mr. Iwata including "a video game is interesting when you can have fun simply watching someone play." Before we had Let's Plays and streaming, this is what many of us did.The book is only 154 pages and reads pretty quickly. You do not need a profound reading ability to understand its contents. Mr. Iwata believed in effective communication and always pondered where he might have failed if his message was not well received (instead of blaiming the person who misunderstood him). The book delivers on that level of brevity. Expect to enjoy the details, but expect to want more. It is definitely worth it and definitely worth multiple reads.I never knew Mr. Iwata, but through this book and his legacy I definitely feel like we could have struck up a conversation.
